India

In most Indian markets the overwhelming majority of website visits arrive on a phone, and outside the metros that share is higher still. Many people’s only computer is their phone. Designing for desktop and then shrinking it down produces a site that fails the audience that actually visits.

What this article covers

  • Mobile-first is a sequence, not a screen size
  • Design for the device people actually own
  • Make the primary action impossible to miss
  • Respect thumbs and data budgets
  • Forms are where mobile sites lose people
  • Readable type and real contrast

Mobile-first is a sequence, not a screen size

It means designing the phone layout first, then expanding for larger screens. Doing it the other way round means you start with everything and then decide what to cut, which reliably produces a cramped mobile experience with a hamburger menu hiding the things people needed most.

Design for the device people actually own

Not the latest flagship. A mid-range Android with a modest processor on an inconsistent 4G connection is the realistic test device. A page that feels instant on a developer’s machine over office broadband can be genuinely unusable on that phone, which is why testing on real hardware matters.

Make the primary action impossible to miss

On a phone, the call button, the WhatsApp link and the enquiry form are the entire point. They should be visible without scrolling, large enough to hit with a thumb, and repeated further down the page. Buried contact details are the most common conversion failure we find on Indian small business sites.

Respect thumbs and data budgets

Tap targets need adequate size and spacing, and important controls belong within comfortable thumb reach at the bottom of the screen rather than the top corner. Every megabyte you serve costs your visitor data. Compressed images, no autoplaying video and lazy loading below the fold are courtesy as much as performance.

Forms are where mobile sites lose people

Every additional field measurably reduces completions. Ask for a name and a phone number and nothing else. Use the correct input types so the numeric keypad appears for phone fields. Consider replacing the form entirely with a WhatsApp link, which for many Indian audiences converts considerably better.

Readable type and real contrast

Body text below sixteen pixels is a strain on a phone, particularly for older users. Light grey text on white looks refined on a monitor and disappears entirely on a phone screen in daylight. Test your site outdoors before you sign it off.

What this means for businesses in our region

We see the gap between businesses that act on this and those that do not right across our service area, from Moradabad’s export houses to family-run retailers in Rampur and hotels in Nainital. The difference is rarely budget.

It is almost always consistency. The businesses that win are not the ones that did something clever once. They are the ones that kept doing something reasonable every month for two years while their competitors started and stopped.

The short version

The practical test is simple. Open your site on your own phone, on mobile data, standing outside. If finding your phone number takes more than five seconds, the design has failed regardless of how it looks in a mockup.

If you are reading this while deciding whether to hire someone, it is worth noting that most of the above is work you could do yourself with a few hours a month. Paying for it makes sense when your time is worth more elsewhere, or when the work needs to happen consistently for two years rather than enthusiastically for two weeks.

If you would like to discuss how any of this applies to your own business, or you simply want a second opinion on advice you have been given, we are happy to talk it through without any obligation.
