Choosing an agency is difficult because you are buying something you cannot fully evaluate until months later. The good news is that most bad engagements are avoidable, because the warning signs appear during the sales conversation if you know what to listen for.

What this article covers

  • Ask what they will actually do each month
  • Insist on owning your accounts
  • Look at results, not at awards
  • Check who does the work
  • Read the exit terms before the entry terms

Distrust guaranteed rankings

Nobody controls Google’s algorithm, so nobody can honestly guarantee a position. An agency promising number one for a competitive term is either misleading you or planning to rank you for a phrase nobody searches, such as your own company name. A credible commitment is to a defined scope of work and transparent reporting.

Ask what they will actually do each month

‘SEO and social media management’ is not a scope. Ask for specifics: how many pages optimised, how many articles, what technical work, how many campaigns, what reporting. If the answer stays vague after two attempts to pin it down, that vagueness will persist into the engagement.

Insist on owning your accounts

Your website, domain, hosting, Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads and Business Profile should all be registered in your name with you holding administrator access. Agencies that hold these accounts hostage are common, and the leverage they create is the reason clients stay in bad relationships.

Look at results, not at awards

Ask for case studies from businesses roughly your size in roughly your situation. Ask what the traffic and enquiry numbers were before and after, and over what period. Ask to speak with a current client. An agency proud of its work will arrange that without hesitation.

Check who does the work

A frequent pattern is a polished senior person selling the engagement and a junior executing it unsupervised. Ask who will handle your account day to day, what their experience is, and how many other clients they carry.

Read the exit terms before the entry terms

Lock-in period, notice period, and what you take with you when you leave. Content, accounts and data should be yours. A confident agency does not need a punitive contract to retain clients, so a heavy lock-in tells you something about their retention rate.

What this means for businesses in our region

This applies as much to a business in Haldwani, Kashipur or Rudrapur as it does to one in a metro, and arguably more, because the competitive bar in district markets is lower and therefore considerably easier to clear.

It is worth being realistic about scale, though. A business serving one district does not need the apparatus of a national brand. It needs the fundamentals done properly and maintained, which is a much smaller job than most agencies imply.

The short version

Prefer an agency that sets modest, specific expectations over one that promises transformation. The first is describing work; the second is describing a sales pitch.

If you are reading this while deciding whether to hire someone, it is worth noting that most of the above is work you could do yourself with a few hours a month. Paying for it makes sense when your time is worth more elsewhere, or when the work needs to happen consistently for two years rather than enthusiastically for two weeks.

If you would like to discuss how any of this applies to your own business, or you simply want a second opinion on advice you have been given, we are happy to talk it through without any obligation.

One more thing

A final practical note. Whatever you implement here, write down what you did and when. Six months later, when you are trying to work out why traffic moved, a two-line record of changes is worth more than any analytics dashboard. Most small businesses skip this and then have no way of telling which of their efforts actually mattered.
